There are no household fire escape solutions on the market that are accessible to users with limited mobility. Lifespine integrates belayed descent into the traditional fire escape procedure, enabling users to first lower any household members with physical limitations or disabilities before descending the ladder themselves.

The procedure is designed to be clear and sequential in high-stress situations. After deploying the ladder, users are quickly clipped into the prepared sling and lowered by another user, guided down by the curved rung segments. Inspired by the mechanics of the Petzl GRIGRI, descent speed is controlled by simply raising the belay handle. Remaining household members then climb down via the rung cutouts.
